Now that Darin has joined me and we are settled in, I think it’s time to give you a glimpse of our island home. If you read my recent grocery shopping story (it can be found here), then you know that we are located 1.5 miles north of the bridge on a paved road. This road was paved about two years ago, but most resorts on the north end previously used boats to transport guests.
Once you park, a security guard welcomes you at the lobby entrance. You can now say that your vacation has officially started!
There is currently a boat option from San Pedro town, but the water taxi has a defined schedule and you might have to wait for thirty minutes to an hour for a ride. With a gorgeous view of the ocean, who cares about the wait?
I was walking to town for groceries, but we just purchased bikes and we can always take the water taxi. Golf carts are fun if you want to dish out about $300 per week. Long term golf cart rentals are a bit cheaper.
The activities hut provides paddleboards and snorkel gear to residents and visitors. They can also arrange tours to the reef, nearby islands, or to many attractions on the mainland. I highly recommend exploring the country!
So many iguanas and birds call this place home. We were recently invaded by dragonflies who like to eat mosquitos. I tell them to keep munching!
One building houses two restaurants/bars, a small gym, meeting space, and a convenience store that occupy all four floors. It also contains one of the few elevators on the island, which takes you to the rooftop terrace for an amazing view of the sunset to the west.
Back to entering from the beach side…the grounds are meticulously maintained.
Two smaller pool areas flank the large pool and both have hot tubs. We sit in those when it rains.
We can order food by the pool from 8a-7p. Everything is delicious because it comes from the restaurant upstairs.
Morning coffee on the porch is my favorite time of day. Then we head out for a three mile walk along the beach.
Grand Caribe was recently voted the number one hotel in Belize by the Belize Tourism Board. Check out this great video of the property here. This little island stole our hearts twelve years ago.
I am happy to report that occupancy is up, but not happy that it may be driven by the major hurricane damage in the eastern Caribbean. Better book your trip now if you are coming!
