DETOUR OR STOP SIGN?

We packed up and left Scagway about 7:30am before the tour buses got out on the road. We were the only 2 vehicles going through Canadian customs and we breezed right through. Everything was going so well. We passed through the clouds again like the first day we came over the mountains. I took a picture with my cell phone to give you an idea.

We lost an hour getting into Canada but we were making great time…for about 3 hours. As we passed through Whitehorse, our walkie talkies picked up some other travelers talking about staying another day and not continuing on. Then a lady said the highway was shut down as she read an update from her phone. What?

I quickly googled it and sure enough about 3 miles ahead of us the road was completely closed. The only way out of town. The article said that many people could not even go to work today because they couldn’t get into the city. A tanker truck rolled over and spilled airplane fuel at 7am this morning. It was nearly 12pm and I told dad to pull off “now”. We found a gravel drive in front of a house just in the nick of time. Not a detour, but stopped right there and no where to go!

Now we had to decide whether to go back and stay in Whitehorse or wait it out. It was lunch time so we sat in the fifth wheel and ate while we kept checking online for updates. The road was cleared at 3pm but only 1 lane each way could drive through. At about 3:45pm we were out of town and down the road heading for Destruction Bay. Only 3 hours lost. I guess it could have been worse.
