Some people argue that the best Christmas is a white Christmas, and I totally agree! But my favorite white scenery features sand instead of snow. This year it looks like much of the USA is experiencing some kind of wintry weather just in time for Santa’s arrival.
That being said, it is a big adjustment for people who celebrate holidays in a warm tropical climate away from family. The expats here in Belize seem to be very similar to us. They are tired of all of the commercialism of the holidays and would rather live “experiences” than receive more “stuff”.
The holiday season was kicked off in early December with a tree lighting ceremony in Central Park. All the local Belizeans gathered to participate in the festivities. The celebration started with songs by classrooms at each elementary school.
After several speeches by high ranking officials, the Mayor of San Pedro officially lit the giant tree. Lady Dixie spoke about the origin of this particular tree and how her company, Bowen and Bowen, bought it in Miami and had it shipped to the island many years ago.
I personally like to see the town’s tree with blue sky, palm trees, and the beautiful ocean in the background. I wish it could stay up year ‘round. Just look how pretty…
We tend to hit up our local bakery at least twice a week. I love all of the festive sweets I see on the shelves this time of year. I could take one of everything, but my clothes would be mad at me.
During the weekend following the tree lighting, another big event takes place. The holiday boat parade is a good reason for islanders and visitors to line up on the shore to watch the lights go by. We had an outstanding view from the Palapa Bar while we ate dinner.
You can find Christmas decorations all over town. I took some photos with my phone as we drove around running errands. Many houses are brightly lit at night, but I only snapped pictures during the day.
The sun makes the colors pop, so you can’t help but notice all the signs of the season. We’ve had perfect weather over the last two months, with the exception of a little cold front for a couple of days.
There are several charity sponsored events that provide toys to needy children and Santa shows up at some popular bars to take pictures with the kids. You know, because kids and dogs are allowed at bars here.
One day, a couple of my friends wanted to put on Santa hats and take pictures around town. I thought, why not? I didn’t have any baking or Christmas shopping to do, so I joined them.
We had a great time searching for photo worthy backdrops. Finding a person to take a photo of the three of us was more of a challenge than we thought. Darin opted out of this adventure, or he could have played photographer.
One guy at the park took our picture in front of the giant Christmas tree, but he didn’t get the tree in the shot. It was mostly pavement! As we laughed about his poor picture taking skills, Santa was passing by and I flagged him down.
There is no shortage of Santas here! The Christmas parade usually showcases at least a half dozen different Kris Kringles.
On Christmas Eve we attended a small party at a friend’s condo. One of our expat friends had to make an appearance at an orphanage.
Christmas dinner by the water, anyone? We were so happy to find a restaurant serving a four course traditional feast and not just seafood. Finishing the day at Pier366 with friends was the perfect, relaxing way to spend an evening away from the crowd at our resort. Good night!
